How To Train for the NFL Draft

How the NFL Draft Works

The NFL Draft is the culmination of years of hard work and preparation for aspiring players. It’s a highly competitive process where pro teams select top talent to build their rosters, following these general steps and timelines:

Step Explanation Timelines
Eligibility  Players must be at least three years out of high school and officially declare for the draft.  Declare by mid-January for the April draft.
Draft Order The teams pick players in reverse order based on how they finished last season to help weaker teams rebuild.  Determined by the end of the NFL season (January).
Rounds and Picks The draft has seven rounds, with around 257 picks (can vary slightly per year). Teams usually get one pick per round, but trades can change this. Typically held over three days at the end of April. In 2025, the draft is set to begin on April 24
Combine and Pro Days Players show off their skills with drills, interviews, and tests for NFL scouts during these events. The NFL Combine happens in February (Feb 27-March 2, 2025); Pro Days are scheduled by individual colleges, typically throughout March.
Undrafted Opportunities Players who aren’t drafted can still sign with teams as free agents, giving them another shot at making it to the NFL. Immediately following the draft in April.
